It is worth remembering that almost all of the cost comes out of the foreign aid budget. If it wasn't being spent here in the UK on these foreigners, it would be sent abroad to be spent on other foreigners. I know that is just one part of this whole issue which many people are angry about. But it might make them feel better if they were aware of this fact.

It is a bit like the hotels issue. If people realise that these asylum seekers are not actually living in "four star luxury", then that might make them feel a bit better too. I know there are plenty other parts of this issue for people to be angry about. But taken together, these bits of information might help tamp down some of the anger and let us focus on real solutions.

If there isn't a problem with ~30% of ODA funds being spend on housing illegal immigrants, then it asks the question if the money should be spent on something more useful, or... and I know this is hard for governments... not spent at all. Rachel has 50Bn to find in a tax raid this autumn. Here's 10% of it.
