One way to patch holes in plasterboard is to cut a piece of plasterboard or ply just narrow enough to fit through the hole in the wall and long enough to overlap it by an inch or two either side. Drill a small hole through it roughly in the middle and thread some string through it knotted on the back. Then put some glue on the front of the patch, thread it through the hole in the wall and use the string to pull it back. Maintain tension on the string while the glue sets. Lastly, cut the sting and fill the hole in the wall with filler.
