Appoved adapters

Can anyone tell me whether/which standards are in force in the UK governing the use of a travel adapter in a BS 1363 socket outlet?

For example, does a travel adapter have to be approved according to a European and/or British Standard?

If so, and it if isn't approved, which law is broken by the act of using such a device?

IIRC it needs to conform with BS5733:1995
This standard is very broad brush as you can tell from the title
"Specification for general requirements for electrical accessories".
