That kind of recommendation works fine until someone takes on a bigger job than they’re used to and comes unstuck. So it’s important to ensure the recommendations come from similar work, rather than the guy who’s great at garden walls being hired to build a small extension etc.

Personally no, I'm always cynical if a tradesperson can jump on a job immediately although they could have had a job delayed. Word of mouth is always going to be a better recommendation than finding someone cold. We're currently booked into mid July. If a tradesperson is sat waiting for work then alarm bells would ring
