Hi Everyone,

I just moved into a flat which has been vacant for about 20 years. They have the old electric brick heaters. One of them was detached from the wall so a friend offered to get rid of it. To do so he tried dismantling it because its to heavy to carry. When he cracked it open, it appears to be insulated with what I believe to be asbestos. He was a bit heavy handed and ended up spreading asbestos dust all over the landing. What am I supposed to do? How do I clean it up so that its not a risk to my long term health?

Thanks

Do you know the make of the heaters? Or how old they were.

I'm not sure of the make. Would need to check that when I'm there tomorrow. They are probably over 22 years old. What I'm concerned about the residual asbestos fibres left on the carpet. The carpet needs renewing so I think of throwing it out anyway. Some guidelines I've just read that you should even dispose of the overhauls used to clean up asbestos dust.

Clearly I'm not expert on this subject so just want to be safe than sorry.

Ever heard of a vacuum cleaner?

Yes I have. What was the point in that derogatory comment? Completely useless. I just found out that you need to use a special (Class H) vacuum cleaner. This is something that would have been useful to mention?????

Please, this is concerning people safety. Only comment if you know what your talking about. Thank you

DO NOT HOOVER ASBESTOS UP WITH A HOUSEHOLD VACCUUM CLEANER!

You will spread it all over, You need as class H machine to do it safely

I recommend wet wipes, dispose of them afterwards in proper asbestos bags, red and clear double bagged

Get sticky tape and pull all fibres off the carpet as they will stick to the sticky tape and dispose it off in asbestos safe bin in your local council dump.
Then you can examine the carpet with a magnifying glass to see if you have missed any fibres. Examine the carpet meticulously and systematically covering the entire area and other areas, also check your footwear soles. ,

You are a complete bell-end. Not only are your comments misinformed, but potentially very dangerous.

Why don't you take your smart-arse, cocky comments somewhere else?

You don't know for sure that the residue is asbestos. The vast majority of manufacturers stopped using any form of asbestos in the 80s. And many stopped in the 70s. So depending on manufacturer and model there's a good chance you are looking at some other material. Masterboard for example.
