We have an old out house in our back garden, we are looking at having it removed for the summer and extending the back garden. We've been told there is asbestos in the roof, is it worth getting a specialist to knock down the out house or can we do it ourselves and just wear masks?

There is minimal risk with asbestos cement sheets outside.

Check what the local councils policy is on either collecting or accepting these at the tip. Place in polythene bags or wrap them in it and dispose.

The rest of the walls you can demolish without any issues

I have removed asbestos cement sheets from my garage roof recently

I followed advice from HSE web site with regards to protective gear

http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/guidance/em6.pdf

Also

Try to do it on a day thats not too windy

Wet roof inside and out first, and keep it wet

Do not use power tools to remove sheet fixings

Remove them gently to stop breakages

Double bag each panel and seal bags with tape (some councils insist it is labeled also)

My local council tip accepted them I just had to give them 24 hours notice

When finished, all masks, coveralls, gloves etc need to be double bagged in same way as sheets and disposed of in same way. I also wore old clothing and disposed of that in same way. don't know if thats overkill, just didnt want to take the chance.
