Happy new year everyone!

I was just looking for some advice about converting a brick shed/outhouse which is about 2 metres detached from the main house into a simple utility room. Just washing machine and dryer really. There is already water plumbed in and we can get electricity in.

I was thinking more about the roof. The shed is shared with our neighbour and we don’t know whether the roof is asbestos containing or not. (I have attached pics). My question is do we need to replace the roof if we will be going in and out a lot to do washing, or can we put in a ceiling and leave the roof in place? Will it be safe to work in? Additionally do we need insulation? What type? The shed itself doesn’t let in any water.

Any advice is much appreciated!
Take care all!

Only one way to ascertain if asbestos or not is to have it tested. If it’s not damaged (on one photo it looks like it is) and not likely to be damaged then you can leave it in situ. If not damaged or disturbed whilst working it’ll be fine also. Same applies for using the outhouse. If it’s asbestos and damaged, then probably best getting it removed, before any work is commenced.

Thank you Chris for your reply. I didn’t even notice that part of the roof was possibly chipped. I’m hoping there is no asbestos but I’ll ring around to find a company in London that does testing

Those sheets are asbestos cement. Safe to be under. The only issues come when you start breaking, cutting, drilling or sanding it.

You can seal it with paint or encapsulate it underneath if you are worried.
