Any carpet fitters out there?
Had one from Tapi yesterday and pretty sure hes fed me a load of b@ll.

Told me he can't hoover up the bits because the carpet needs to settle for an hour or so? Sounds like he just couldn't be arsed.

Worse of all he's thrown bit of door edging (sharp bits) into one of the bedrooms - and my daughter trod on a sharp bit.

One more thing cos I don't trust the guy now -

Stair carpet I took the old one up and noticed no gripper on the sides. (i.e. near the wall 90 degrees to the actual steps). Is this normal?
(Previous owner was a right cowboy so you never know what he cut corners on)
Or is it normal to just run gripper across the step?

Gripper across the step is normal, stairs are not grippered on the sides.

Many fitters do not hoover up, there a million spurious reasons why, about the only one that holds some water is that it gives the home owner the opportunity to go over everything carefully themselves and less risk of any issues being reported a while later that might be attributed to other factors. No, that does'nt hold water with me either and I have been in the trade 30+ years.

Leaving a piece of metal could well have been a mistake etc, accidents happen, sounds like not the best customer service experience.

Apparently the service that Tapi sell is move furniture/tidy up afterwards/ hoover etc.... The guy would have known this, I had a conversation
with the store manager this morning confirmed its the case for ALL fittings and this guy has done loads of work for them.

He was in a massive rush - I'm more peed of he lied to me and tried to blag it.

Yeh if he'd done a good job in general, fair enough about the mistake, but with everything else it just seems careless and "can't be bothered"

Always wondered as well.... For other things it seems some pros avoid working with these big companies. I guess these big companies will push the rate as low as they can.

Is this the case with carpet fitters too? i..e the really good ones have plenty of work anyway and can avoid the places like Tapi?

AFAIK, stair runners aside, the carpet is folded at the edges. In most houses I have worked in, there is a gripper rod just below the nosing on the stairs and then one on the tread just after the riser.

I have seen many carpet fitters tell the customer to wait until the following day before hoovering. I honestly don't know if it is BS.

There doesn’t seem to be a hard and fast rule, I’ve never worked for Tapi or CR I’ve spend 30 years in department store and quality independent flooring businesses.

I’ve come across really good fitters/jobs done by the multiples fitters and seen some utter rubbish.

It is true that rates at independents are generally better and less pressure is put on the m2 fitted in a day, however, Tapi and CR your fitting contract is with the fitter and not Tapi/CR which absolves an element of responsibility/accountability and the fitters get paid direct by the customer with the obvious connotations/percieved potential advantages re: Tax etc.

I have been lucky to work with a number of very good, very skilled fitters on some very high end work regularly, and even at times they can have a falling out with a customer or a customer can take a dislike for some odd reasons so I guess it’s still all part of the customer service industry at the end of the day.

I get that the OP isn’t happy, if the carpet is fitted ok and they were happy with what they paid, I’d put the hoovering and lack of attention to care down to experience personally and probably look to use a different company next time.
