This is a bit of a long shot but hopefully worth a try.....

I've painted the walls of a bedroom with a bad batch or Dulux Emulsion which caused a sour odour once fully dried (walls had been freshly skimmed and paint didn't smell in the tin). I was advised to wash down the walls with bleach and apply Zinsser BIN to lock in the odour. I've now done 3 coats of Zinsser BIN and the smell is still there as strong as ever!

I believe it to be 'Wall Odour Phenomenon' and I want to find out how harmful the bacteria is that's causing the smell and if the room is safe to use (kids bedroom). Has anyone ever used a specialist to test bacteria present inside the plaster of a wall before? Are there companies out there who would even do this kind of testing?

my thoughts
bacteria germs and disease cannot survive in a hostile environment it needs moisture to thrive
they are killed by dryness salty sugary acid alkaline heat sun cold even killed by excessive moisture
and when it says kills 999.9% germs its usually because it has a soap 'basic cleaning or foaming agent that punctures the membrane that then easilly kills the bacteria

if it just smells and is not overly damp, its safe from a bacteria or other airboune or touch point off veiw it may off course contain spores like mold but that will be visible but basic precautions including a mask and a damp cloth during cleaning can easily clean it unless your hyper unlicky
