Name one Islamic country which practices good civil rights, maintains egalitarianism, and supports even half decent gay rights.

Whilst criticising Islam it might be worth checking with the Church of England which, after 2000 years, has just managed to appoint it's first female bishop and is heavily split on the issue of homosexuality.

So when can we expect Islam to appoint its first woman Imam?

In the Church of England, what is the punishment for being homosexual?

As a personal point whatever the religious organisation chooses to preach is their call, as is the choose of the individual to follow it.

Is it their choice? In Islam what is the punishment for Apostasy?

Addendum:

Apostasy in Islam includes in its scope not only former Muslims who have renounced Islam to join another religion or become an atheist, but Muslims who have questioned or denied any "fundamental tenet or creed" of Islam such as Sharia law (unbelief), or who have mocked God, worshiped one or more idols, or knowingly believed in an interpretation of Sharia that is contrary to the consensus of ummah (Islamic community).

The term has also been used for people of religions that trace their origins to Islam, such as Bahá'ís in Iran, and Ahmadiyya Muslims in Pakistan and Indonesia.

The definition and appropriate punishment for apostasy in Islam is controversial, and it varies among Islamic scholars.[9] In Islam’s history, the vast majority of scholars have held that apostasy in Islam is a crime punishable with the death penalty.

"and they should be fought at every opportunity"

Try telling that to reindeer.
He seems more adept in his role as an apologist for their war mongering.

Not all Muslims want to take over the world - only the radicals

And as we sit here, that is exactly what the radicals are hell bent on doing. And while they are at it, what are the silent majority doing to stop them? =0

I am not sure about you because I have never really had too much discussion with you, but for starters, do YOU accept that just because someone has serious questions about immigration in this country, it doesn't mean that they are a 'racist?' If you can agree on that then there is room for a serious discussion.

How refreshing to actually have a readable post with an actual point to it - ta!

Absolutely agree about immigration - there are some serious questions about how it's managed as a policy. I have no problem with immigrants as people - this country has always had a flow of cultures and people for centuries.

There is nothing vaguely racist about discussing immigration and how it should be managed.

Anybody who immediately throws the racist word into a discussion about immigration is

a) An idiot
b) Playing the politically correct role (whatever the hell that is!)
c) Not living in the real world.

Thank you I totally agree. I have no problem with anyone's religion, culture or colour. There are just too many people in this country and our services can't cope with it.

Newboy, I will not quote RNR, as again his reply is long winded and tedious but surely from that you get my point.
So instead of addressing my points, any of them, you console yourself with "I can't be bothered because it's too much effort."
You'e as bad as nocon who replies with "that's nonsense, but I can't explain how it's nonsense."

Typical intellectual capability of the radical fundamentalist racists.

At last a reasonably sized post. Now, which points do you want me to address?
Any points that you disagree with.
You choose.

Well there lies the problem because you never actually make any points do you. Your brain automatically edits people's posts removing any key words to suit your ramblings.

fighting 'racism' where it doesn't exist
  Racism doesn't exist. Which planet are you on?

A good example of you knowing exactly what I am saying but you have to twist it around to suit your ramblings.

Obviously racism exists. But you enjoy 'fighting it' where it doesn't exist because it's easy. If you want to seriously fight racism then why not stand outside the BNP headquarters with a banner?

No idea but not too soon I suspect!

It might be an idea to ask the Catholic church the same question though!

In the Church of England, what is the punishment for being homosexual?

Well according to the bible - death! According to the well worn quote from Leviticus.

The problem is that neither of us (I assume) are religious scholars and if you search around then you can find the quote that suits your argument in the Bible, Quran, Torah etc. etc.

Not a scholar but is Leviticus part of the modern bible. When was the last homosexual put to death by the CoE or Catholic Church?

The problem is that neither of us (I assume) are religious scholars and if you search around then you can find the quote that suits your argument in the Bible, Quran, Torah etc. etc.

Have done a bit of research in my time but can't find a single case of a Catholic or Protestant being put to death (by the church) for leaving either religion in recent history.

Both Catholic and CoE religions went through some barbaric times, but both became rather more civilised.

The Quran (Islamic Bible) has not changed since the day it was supposedly written by a desert nomad who could neither read nor write!

As I admitted a few posts ago, I'm not a religious scholar (or even a scholar of any sort).

The danger of selecting bits of text from any religious document is that I (or, I suspect, you) havn't any idea of context, period or even accuracy.

The Leviticus quotes are probably used and abused in every Christian argument - old testament so no longer valid as we now have the new testament (interesting concept that the word of God can be "updated"!)

Who knows - perhaps the same thing is happening to the Quran.

Quote from Al-Islam (random search result)

"Among many reforms, which the Holy Prophet of Islam, gave to the world, he taught, that all human beings whether brown, black, red, white or yellow, are sons of Adam, and no man has any superiority over another man, because of his colour, rank or riches"

"Islam is a way of life. It is a simple and uncomplicated religion, giving one maximum freedom without encroachment on the freedom of others. It enjoins one to believe in One God, and do good; to keep up prayers and pay the poor-tax; to fast during the month of Ramadhan; to perform the Hajj and to fight for the sake of Allah, whenever necessary; to believe in the Justice of Allah, in the life after death, in the Prophethood of Muhammad and the teachings of the twelve Imams (Leaders). Islam forbids evil and tyranny, prohibits intoxicants and games of chance, adultery and indecencies, and blood and flesh of swine and dead animals."

So maybe some Muslims are bringing religion "up to date"

To clarify - I don't support any religion. In fact the only view I have is that most of the world's conflicts since time immemorial have been based somewhere on religion.

Probably worth remembering that every time Guy Fawkes goes up in smoke, every time there's a Rangers/Celtic match (or in the interest of fair play, a Celtic/Rangers match) or when the '*** Army' chant goes up from the Spurs terraces or when the marching season starts in Northern Ireland.

edit: typo corrected

For what it's worth, my opinion is that both the Koran and the Bible, and the Torah (isn't that just the first few books of the OT anyway?) are ancient documents with absolutely no foundation in their claims to have been written by God (as there ain't no such animal).

It surprises me that supposedly intelligent people still take what is written therein at face value.

The Christian church has, at least, made efforts to re-interpret the Bible in order to move with the times.

Islam, unfortunately, has not.

Atheism, of course, is more advanced than either of them.

As a personal point whatever the religious organisation chooses to preach is their call, as is the choose of the individual to follow it.

Even if the fundamental teachings are of death, destruction and misery to people that don't wish to believe.????

Marvelous.

Even more dangerous than the terrorists themselves, or indeed the global Islamic takeover, are people like Red herring (Reindeer).

The do-gooders sold this country down the b*stard river and continue to do so.
The damage is now done. Damage limitation is a distant grasp too far.

Too late.
