When switching the lights on there is a sudden bang, we thought it was the bulb in the beginning but when we replaced it the bang! happened again. It's ethier the fitting (which is a ceiling fan) or the wires have come loose. I have attached a photo of the wiring if any good?

I don't know how happy / competent you are for working on electrics, but if you could disconnect the brown wire (the one with the 'live' flag on it) from the strip connectors, and then try turn the power on to the fitting . If it still goes bang (I presume this blows the fuse / trips the MCB) then there is a problem with the fixed wiring. If not then it is the fitting that is at fault.

Can you switch off the fan part of the fan light (sometimes a switch on the fitting)?

I have tried turning the light off on the pull cord and the fan comes on and starts spinning, when I put the light on there is a flash from were the bulb is and trips the circuits.

Is it worth still disconnecting the brown wire?

i would say not , get a new fan / light, since you have identified its the lamp part at fault.

a new fan light will probably less hassle than taking the existing one apart to find the damaged wire and having to replace it

In that case then no. It sounds to be a problem with the light part of the fitting. What sort of lamp does it take? is it a screw in type? Can you post a picture of the inside of the lampholder? Are there any signs of blast marks / scorching / burning on the fitting?

That bare earth wire wont help it either!! While you have the fan down, get some earth sleeving from your local diy store and slip it over it! This could easy cause a short to live or neutral

In fact, the neutral going into the block looks like the bare conductor is exposed. If this is the case, undo it, cut it down a little so that you cannot see the bare copper conductor (only the black sheath showing!!).

MAKE SURE YOU SWITCH OFF AT THE MAINS BEFORE DOING THIS.

That neutral could be shorting across to the live wire!! Its difficult to see from this pic! Looks like that neutral goes into the live!! Need some more pics if poss.

The fan motor could be dead short between live-neutral. Can you isolate the fan??

it only goes bang when the light is turned on, but i didnt want to mention the earth sleaving yet, i was more worried abit the earth wire in the picture, you cant see where it goes

thanks guys I will buy a new one as they are only about 20 quid or so, might be back later for installation instructions

is the light hanging by the wires? It looks like there should be a harness from that hook on the mounting plate to that bit of metal sticking out from the fitting.

doesnt matter now, poster is getting a new one, besides i should supect poster dod that to make picture easier to view
