No, that is just an electrode - like a spark plug. It ignites the gas flow and if the gas ignites OK - its job is done.

Fitted a new thermocouple yesterday, the fire lit after a few attempts. This morning tried to light it again and it won't light at all

Have you tried resetting the overheat stat? When it's tripped it will have a bit sticking out which you can push back in, and feel/hear it click.

The 2 flying leads from the thermocouple go on it.
Out of curiosity, how old is the fire, and is this a new problem?

Sorry @fixitflav the fire was installed in December 2000. We haven't managed to try it yet hopefully tonight, but I'll keep you updated with the outcome thank you
