Well it certainly seemed to go down well at the Ceremony at the time..but your right the media did pounce...possible not because of the PC angle but maybe because the the human interest side....half the country would have paid good money to see Norman Lamont Publicly fisted!

Your right though remark may not have done him any favours but I feel his career was on the skids (oooeer mrs!!) by then anyway...it seemed to be more of an image revamp as opposed to a comeback (more oooeers!!)

Now if I can just incorporate a one liner on the lines of the 'Police kicking in Mr Higginbottoms back door and tearing up his back passage' into this I will have the full house!

Much as I didn't like the man when he was alive I wouldn't mock the dead like that.
 
What i find amazing is how people speak as if they knew the man, they did not, all they knew was a public persona.

Of all the famous people in the world, how often did you hear stories about Bernard Manning? Rarely is the answer. Outside of the public domain he seemed to live a quiet life, gave a fortune to charity over the years and often raised money for good causes. So his jokes where not to everyones taste, that is what humour is about and what makes us all different. We should all be careful not to confuse the public image with the real person, then look deep inside ourselves and ask one simple question "Am I really that much different as a person?" The answer will be no. We all make mistakes, tell unPC jokes, and are normal everyday people, we expect to be treated with a modicome of respect, and in death we should all command respect unless we have taken actions in our life to erode that respect, and telling bad jokes, unPC jokes or jokes that a small minority of the population don't like is hardly a reason not to show respect for the dead. It is a game we all lose eventually.
 
I don't subscribe to the proposition that the dead deserve any more, or less, respect than the living. BM chose to behave the way he did in public, and did so consistently, not as an episode of human error or a temporary aberration.

Notwithstanding all that, my first post on this topic had nothing to do with his private life, family, or personality. I thought I'd made that clear. I'm pleased that he can no longer peddle his vile stage act and tell his hideous jokes, which, BTW, included poking fun at the dead.

Edit: I just re-read Craig's post, which reminded me of the other reason I had no respect for him when alive, being that he wasn't capable of being the butt of a joke himself. Not an appealing trait in any human being, let alone a professional comedian. Or was he just putting on the character of a gigantic hypocrite?
