I'm looking to purchase a bath/hot tub 1800X1800 600 deep.

I've seen quotes of a tonne in weight when it's fully loaded.

Do I need to involve a structural engineer before splashing out?

Not really, are you talking about putting the hot tub into the ground level?

It's going in a 1st first floor flat on a suspended timber floor.

The inside dimension of the flat wall to wall is 6.5m X 7.5m

The timber joists are supported in the middle by an RSJ which spans 6.5m. The RSJ is fixed into the external walls either side, onto what I believe are described as 'pad stones'.

No additional support is provided to the floor in the form of walls or posts from ground level

The bath would be located almost directly over the RSJ at one end. I wall planning on overlaying the floor boards in that area and putting down 25mm WPB ply.

I remember reading some where that although these hot tubs are heavy crucially the weight is distributed so does not present a problem

Water weighs .......1000 kg per cubic metre.

Assuming your dimensions are internal...1.8 x 1.8 x .6 = 1.944 cubic metres.
Thus the water would weigh ...1944 kg....if full.....Nearly 2.0 tonnes...

Obviously your internal dimensions would be smaller than this, thus you could calculate the weight of water as above, once you know the internal dimensions. Don,t forget to add the weight of the unit. Plus the weight of two people....

I would get expert advice on the load bearing capability of your floor before proceeding....

Dry weight = 110kg approx
Operating capacity = 600 litres (It's a round bowl shape)

Not sure of the additional weight for occupants taking into account that water will also get displaced by the addition of bodies

either way Im pretty sure it will not break the 1 tonne mark

Do the calculations based on it being filled to the lip - one day someone will!

And the water displaced does not disapear, it will still be on the floor.

Sorry, you will need a structural engineer, I was assuming the hot tub was going in the garden :!:

How are you going to get the hot tub on the 1st floor :?: :?

What is on the ground floor flat :?:

What about the water tipping over the side :?:

I have the same size hot tub as you and the total weight with water is 1630kg (3594 lbs) then you must add the average weight of 4 adults weighing 175 lbs. each.

Thanks for the responses to this thread.

Going to go for a big double ended bath instead ..... The women's netball team will just have to form an orderly queue and wait their turn 8)
