Boiler replacement under scrappage scheme

My father's looking into replacing his G-Rated boiler under the scrappage scheme but is worried about costs. The current system comprises an open vented boiler downstairs in the middle of the late 50s house which exhausts into a single-walled metal flue in the central chimney. There are air bricks in the kitchen to facilitate air intake by the boiler. There are 3 rads downstairs and a further 6 upstairs all fed by a single pipe system with surface mounted 1/2 inch copper pipework. Is there a sensible cheap fix or does he need to replace the whole lot.... and would the £500 govt contribution (Wales) make much of a dent in the final total? Regards Steve

Sounds like an expensive upgrade to comply with current Building Regs is required Ball park £2,500 - £3000.00 would cover it

Thanks so far chaps...the scheme only started in Wales a few days ago - April 6th - and hes applied for a voucher so fingers crossed. Im essentially trying to find out if there is a condensing boiler of any description he could fit which would work reasonably well off the single pipe system and flue through the chimney. Otherwise is it a case of new rads/TRVs, new pipes chased into the walls and redecoration? Ive read on here that flueing through the chimney flue could present problems too even though it sounds a good idea environmentally....werent chimneys invented for such things?
