... Likewise you can connect them to a 12 v transformer but as they are DC devices they would likely be damaged. ... It is likely that the device in your box is not a transformer at all but a switch mode LED driver which some idiots, including manufacturers, wrongly call transformers.
With respect, I think you will have been totally confusing the OP (who admitted, from the start, that he was not an electrician) by these semantic comments. We know that what you are saying is arguably semantically correct but we also all know what the OP is talking about when he uses the word 'transformer'.

These discussions/arguments about words can be fun, sometimes even interesting, for 'those who know', but I really don't think we should confuse DIYers who ask questions with them. It would have been fair enough for you to have initially pointed out to him that what he was calling a transformer was actually something else, but I would imagine that your initial ('sarcastic') offering ("LED strip lighting requires 12 volt DC. Transformers are AC devices so you cannot use a transformer.") will almost certainly have confused the OP.

I bought the box of electronics to 'drive the LED's as a package from the supplier, and yes they called it a transformer too.

However the semantics (and what should it be called ?), that is off topic ... my questions is can I or can I not install LED lighting in:

1) domestic situations (dwellings):
2) Exhibitions, Shows and Events

This involves a 'transformer' with a mains plug on the end in box, PAT Tested, connection of the transformers output terminals will be to a few metre run of bell wire, and then onto LED strip lighting.

Thanks

Quite so - that's what I was trying to point out to winston1. It 'should be called' a 'power supply' ('switch{ed}-mode power supply' if you really want), 'LED driver' or something like that. However, we all (including him) knew what you meant.

In general, plugging something portable/temporary into a socket does not really count as 'installing', at least in domestic situations.

However, as for 'exhibitions, shows and events', I would imagine that they will usually be covered by all sorts of regulations (e.g. 'H&S', 'Electricity at Work' etc.) regulations, and may well require anything to do with electricity (including changing light bulbs/lamps) to be undertaken by a 'qualified electricians'. Others will probably have a better idea than me of what regulations are involved.

Kind Regards, John
