C Plan mod completed, savings already

i completed my C Plan wiring last week and had a plumber fit the zone valve earlier this week.

i paid £3.55 for the honeywell 10 way JB
£ 12.45 for the honeywell cylinder stat, and cable/wire cost me only £12
the zone valve was a Salus 6 wire 22mm zone valve, the only 22mm valve i could find with 6 wire, that cost £26 so all in it was 54 quid for parts, and plumber charged 40 quid for 30 min.

3 hours work pulling cables in, mounting the box and wiring it all up.

it all worked first time!

i now have independent control of CH and HW and im already saving an average of 4 metres cubed a day with the heating on for the same amount of time as before!

for those who cannot afford to upgrade their boilers and have old semi gravity systems, i really do recommend going for a C plan, for under 100 quid (providing you wire it yourself) it is possible to make a very in-efficient system a little better, and you can save yourself some cash on the gas bill!

Is the HW primary still gravity? Did you consider making it, pumped?
 
yes the HW primary is still gravity, i did consider making it fully pumped but i decided c plan was the cheaper option at this time for me, i shall get a pic asap
 
Are you vent and cold feed connected into your primaries?

Where have you installed the Valve?

You may have made the system dangerous.

I know this is a really old post, but I am really keen to get the wiring for the Salus on a C Plan

I think the grey needs to go to the boiler and the orange is always live on the Salus while on a honeywell (the only full wiring diag I can get) the orange goes to the boiler and the grey is always live

I have a MV228 2-port valve

Hope you can help

The Salus shoud have the following coloured wires:

White, Grey, Orange, Blue, Brown and Green/yellow.

Providing your using a 10 way wiring centre for the C plan as in :

White needs to go in terminal 9 of your 10 way terminal block
Grey needs to go in terminal 1
Orange needs to go in terminal 10 with the boiler live
Blue goes in 2 (Neutral)
Brown goes in 8 with the cylinder stat switch wire.
Green/yellow is obviously earth/ground and goes in 3

Its also worth noting that earlier this year the Salus valves motor packed in and that the standard replacement motors that Wickes sell are like for like.

You have provided 2 diagrams that I have been looking at and I think are at odds with each other and therefore my reason for posting

If you look at the Honeywell diagram on the valve you can see that orange is common, while on the Salus the grey is common.

I reckon that if you connect grey to perm live, then the white will also be perm live while the valve is closed - which means in this case that the pump would be perm on.

Do you follow that?

For some reason I can't understand Salus have swapped over the grey and orange wires. If you have a meter it might be worth checking it's not just an error on the diagram.

But if the Salus diagram is correct, you follow the Honeywell diagram but swap the orange and grey, i.e orange to 1 and grey to 10. White still goes to 9.
 
Yeah, that's what I think I should do

I've been in contact with Salus, but they are a bit backward in coming forward with the answers. They eventually sent me their C-Plan diagram, but they put the valve on the heating side rather than the hot water. It did however prove the wiring diagram that you provided here - grey is common and normally closed on white. They just don't use the white in their set up

I sent them my modified diagram and am waiting for their response, but I don't think they will.

Madness really because if you want to sell valves, for the sake of providing people with clear instruction, people would be more likely to buy them. There must be thousands of systems installed before the 1990s that lend themselves to a C-Plan set up and would save people a tidy amount on their heating bills. It's just a missed opportunity
 
There's no real advantage of putting the valve in the CH circuit. But if you put it in the HW circuit you can then use a 2-channel programmer with independent CH and HW times.

Forget Salus, their customer service is obviously as good as their products! Put the valve in the HW circuit and wire as per Honeywell, but with grey and orange swapped.

The location of the valve is important. It can go on either the flow or return to/from the cylinder, provided there is a clear path from the boiler to the vent pipe when the valve is closed.
