So, in out house we have (what we think) is a decorative fireplace - its really large and we would like to remove it and replace it with something a little smaller and compact.

heres what we have

and heres what we would like (more or less)

Can any one give any indication of how much this might cost to remove.

And if possible how much a simple/smaller alcove might be (to house a small wood burner) might cost also?

I realize its a tricky question, but funds are tight and id just like to manage expectations. if its something we cant afford we may put it off till next year.

cheers!

^

The picture of the fireplace you want doesn't look that much smaller than your existing fireplace.

You could put a bit of stud work on the high areas where your existing fireplace steps in (to make in a uniform width from floor to ceiling) then fix plasterboard to the whole lot, get it skimmed and then paint white.

A days work for a plasterer I'd guess.

@^woody^ lol, love it! but the poor guys goto go :)

Just to confirm, it like the look of the other fireplace - but would be looking something in that style only. So ultimately something smaller is needed.

I had something like that done and am glad I did. It freed up some space and looks much better (and is more in keeping with the period of the house)
