CAN I RUN A TELEVISION FROM A CEILING LIGHT ROSE

Could I not just use a normal plug making sure the plug was fused with 3 amp. We are to stay in this house for a while so only us would be using the socket. I would also place it high by the tv.

If you are installing a 5A socket to your existing lighting circuit which will be a direct feed, install a switched 5A socket for local isolation, use lighting cable 1.0mm² or 1.5mm² Twin & Earth.

What you plug into it, is down to you, anything less than 5A is suitable for the design of the accessory.

Plugging in a 17in LCD will not be a problem I can assure you.

It's not the ideal solution but it will work and unless anyone on this forum can tell me which regulation says you cannot install a 5A socket outlet to a lighting circuit.

It's a 5A socket designed to be installed to a lighting circuit, what he plugs into it, be it a table lamp or whatever, providing it's load is less than 5A or 3A depending on what fuse he fits in the plug, everything is protected.

and how is he going to fit any fuse in a 5 amp plug?

No one said it was against any regs, its just the inrush of current we are worried about

There are some things you do not do this is one of them.

Sorry to say steve, you are wrong.

If it is an LCD or Plasma, as we are led to believe, the tranny in these is bound to trip a B6 on switch on. It reallly is.

He does also say he is going to use a round pin unfused socket, which is better than fitting a 13amp to the circuit, but still a rubbish design for a TV.

13amp sockets on a lighting circuit is an awfull circuit design - a DIY bodge.

Lectrician,

Just tried a 17in LCD, with DVD Player also Digibox, all lights on upstairs, total load not including TV 3A.
6A B Type Mcb, TV operates no problem!!!!!

MK 5A Plug top has 5A fuse, 3A does not.

Also, obviously i need to connect to the live and not the switched live. How do you identify the difference between the 2. Is the switched red/white striped? Sorry to be a pain.

How do you identify the difference between the 2. Is the switched red/white striped?

Most often the switched live is black with a red sleeve ( or blue with a brown sleeve ) but often the sleeve is missing.

In the ceiling rose the switched live is the one connected to the brown of the light fitting / bulb holder. The permanent live is the two or three reds joined together but NOT conencted to the lamp. ( but may be connected to a fan ).

But the advice is to NOT use the lighting circuit for a socket for a TV set.

But can you answer this question, Why can you not just use a 13AMP plug with a 5 AMP fuse in. Is that not the same as using a 5 AMP plug. Obviously one has round pins and the other doesnt?

Right so can you buy a 5AMP Plug with a 5 AMP fuse. If so where can I get this from. Screwfix don't seem to sell them

Because some one may unplug the TV plug and put something else in that takes enough current to trip the MCB. This puts ALL the lights out with some one in the loft. At night that could be quite dangerous.

Rather than a 5 amp plug and socket. Could I not connect the tv directly into a fused FCU of some sort, thus noone will be able to plug anything into it then as the tv would be wired directly into it?
