can someone help to identify this?

Not absolutely required, as there are alternatives. What are the problems with your system? Would it be air being drawn in by any chance? Just cut it out and clean or replace. Where is the cold feed connected to the system? That's the pipe from the small tank in the loft.

There are two pipes that join up 30cm further up. One of them I believe is from the tank.

The problem is that I think its clogged and there is no flow through the system. The magnet sticks to it.

You've been told what to do. Cut it out and replace.

Does it mean I need it? Can I cut it out and just leave with a junction? I am not a plumber and would not be able to solder the pipes. However, I would be able to use compression elbows and junction.

Not really, you could go any cold feed/open vent config, but is easier to replace, also what boiler do you have? Might be an option to go sealed system.

Problem resolved. The pump impellers were full of gunk, plus the pipes around clogged. All cleaned and the CH works beautifuly, rads too hot to hold!

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions.

That's it fixed for about 3 months then!! - you really need to to find the cause of the sludge build up or it is only goint to happen again soon!

I have also installed the magnet filter thing, will that keep the dirt cleaned?
Also, when you say find the couse, what do you think it could be and how to fix more permanently?

many thanks

Have you checked it's not over pumping? This can be the problem but there are others.
