I am looking at a car tomorrow, a dealer (small one)
It was a single owner and had been on a private plate, they are refitting a normal plate
It has a FSH

Obviously I will ask when I see it but one question would be

Is it normal that a car owner would hold a new car’s original registration to pass on when the car is sold?

I am asking as obviously I will do checks on the car and don’t know if the VIN would be of any use when checking for damage/insurance.
I have only used a cheap check about £5 for one other car but would spend more to get better info

TIA

If the car had a traditional plate on it when first registered, then it will revert to this number if the owner of the plate takes the number “off” the car

If the car had the private plate on it when it was first registered, then a new number will be allocated to it when the private plate is removed

Hope this helps

Salvage rebuilds uk on youtube use a vehicle checker and give out a discount code if its of any use.

I had a private plate on my car and returned it to its original number once sold.

Thanks
Any idea if the private plate would “hide” any damage repair under that plate?

It'd be a very small amount of damage if it did. No more than a normal registration plate - do you worry about damage behind regular registration plates?

My current car had a private plate on before I bought it and it reverted to the original whilst at the dealers before I bought it, it did take about a year or something for it to start showing up properly on websites when you search for car parts etc. I've never taken the number plates off to check what's behind in the 9 years of ownership.

I think he means any accidental damage that occurred whilst registered as the private plate. Not damage to or behind the plate itself.

And no, it shouldn't. But as always, damage and repairs can be done without any formal insurance recordings.

Thanks
To be clear I did mean that I wondered if the plate would have influenced any search for crash damage under its original / now plate.
I did a check and it picked up the plates changes and indicated that it searches for both.
So no (reported) damage in it’s life either on issued or private number

Thanks
Checking the deal and making a decision over the weekend

AFAIK any damage will be recorded no matter how many registrations have been applied. These vehicle checking companies have an accurate history of the vehicle, servicing, mot’s, mileage, ownership changes etc.
