Hi all,

I'm after a bit of advice about how and what i should use to clean and maintain my heating system.

I've got a Worcester Bosch Greenstar combi boiler (about 4 years old) which runs 11 rads of various sizes and i think it is about time i cleaned and re filled the system with a decent inhibitor.

What would you recommendations be on a system cleaner and then an inhibitor? One point that might be relevant is the pipes to the rads are microbore.

Find your drain valve attach hose pipe and allow it to start draining.
Open your filling loop and maintain the pressure of a little over 1 bar.

Let the boiler run on central heating like this for 15-30 minutes and monitor the colour of the water coming out of the system.

That should give it a basic clean out.

You can of course the drain down until the radiators upstairs are empty
then remove a radiator valve and add your inhibitor.

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.

Would you recommend any cleaning solution in it? Also what inhibitor would you use when re-filling?

Leave well alone. By all means draw off a small sample of the central heating water to check it if you wish. If you never have to top up the pressure or vent radiators, it is best not to drain and refill. New water includes new air in solution plus new impurities.

Thanks for the reply - the only reason i though of doing it to start with was it seems as if pipe knocking noise has got louder this winter - should i put up with it then?

Did you mention that to the engineer the last time you had your boiler serviced?

What did he think about it.

Generally if originally fitted to a clean system there is no need ever to drain and clean.

Thanks, i'm going to be adding a towel rail into the system soonish, when ensuite is done - this was when i was thinking of draining down and refilling, should i just add the towel rail into system and fill as required? should i add any inhibitor at this point to be safe?

That's OK. I don't believe in unnecessary draining and refilling. If it is knocking due to poor circulation, that will need sorting out.

Thnaks for all the help on this - if i do opt to clean and re fill - can any one recommed the best products for this?

DS-40 is a good heavy duty cleaner not for the faint though.

Followed by any WRAS approved inhibitor
