Changed double socket but unsure if earthing is correct?

It seems to be going up where the other black cables are. Is it possible for me to earth it myself to the back box? Would it be a simple enough job for a beginner?

Yes, a short extra piece of wire (4" long?) between the earth terminal of the socket and the earth terminal/lug/screw at the very back of the metal box.

Yes, it is crucial that the socket has a proper earth,

It is the Earth to the socket that provides the safety Earth for appliances that are plugged in the socket.

This Earth connection may have to carry a large amount of current if ( when ) an appliance becomes faulty and develops a Live to Case fault. This current has to be large enough to trip the MCB ( assuming no RCD ) to disconnect the Live . If the Earth connection wire is too thin then the wire may melt before the MCB trips,

When such a fault happens then without the Earth connection to the socket's Earth terminal the case of the appliance would become Live and anyone touching it could receive a serious ( maybe fatal ) electric shock.
