I have to change a few leaky rad valves that tightening/packing the gland nuts hasn't fully resolved.

If anyone could be kind enough to fill in the blanks it would be most helpful....

1. From what I've read, a rad should have a lockshield valve and a control valve. Is this the same on all systems? My valves seem to be the same on both ends....

2. I want to fit one of the rads with a TRV. Am I right that I fit a TRV to one end and a lockshield to the other?

3. I'm reading conflicting advice as to whether the TRV/lockshield can go on either the flow or return end or the rad. Can somebody clarify.

4. For the rads not having a TRV fitted, are the valves fitted to each end the same type or is one a lockshield, the other a a control valve?

Any advice appreciated!

Rad valves are the same on both ends....its only the tops that are different. The lockshield has a non adjustable top (after the rads have been balanced), the other one has the top that you can turn by hand.
Fit the TRV to the flow side of your rad, and the lockshield at the other. It will still need balancing.
Most TRV's are bidirectional - i.e they can fit on either end - but its still best practice to fit them on the flow.
