I need to erect a small L-shaped bannister at the top of a staircase, roughly 18" x 24" with one end attached to a wall, the other free-standing.

At the usual DIY places, newels, bannisters and handrails add up to over £200 which seems extortionate.

Could anyone suggest any alternative options? Any sources for wrought iron or similar?

3x3" planed [69x69] with a chamfered edge
remember to keep gaps below 99mm to comply with regs

Thanks, that was one thought.

Is a length of 1" dowel secure enough to hold a newel? The original ones have been sawn off at floor level.

better if you can rebate and attach centrally to the string or a floor joist with relevant noggins to at least 2 or 3 sides

Thanks, will have a closer look with the floor boards up to see what's best.
