I've just bought a late 80s car with fully functioning cassette player. That said, the audio from the cassette is a little distorted. Hopefully not the belt, I'd firstly like to clean the head. I'd normally wipe over with cotton bud dipped in IPA but looking with a torch through the door, I can't see the head. When a tape is pushed into the door, the mechanism moves the tape into position.

What's a good way to clean the head? Do tape cleaning heads work / still exist?

Thanks for any help and advice.

Normally you can clean it with alcohol and a cotton swap. A bit of wear to the sides may be acceptable, as long as the surface is smooth. If there are rough edges or corrosion, the head might need to be replaced.
