You should see fizzing if it's working. Just keep wiping off then squirting more on until it's gone.
Obviously it's easier to maintain rather than letting it build up. But it will get rid eventually.
Keep away from strong acids, they can do a lot of damage. Glass can be deliberately etched with acid to produce a frosted effect. It was also used with a stencil in the old days to security etch your reg no on the side windows of your car.
