What course are you doing?
To give you an idea I did something similar to this for HNC:
555 circuit giving a clock pulse to a decade counter. The decade counter driving a 7 segment decoder which in turn drives a 7 segment display.
Also from the decade counter (1 and to an And gate to drive the next 10 bit counter and so on.

The 4026 has a %10 output so no need for a separate driver and has an inbuilt decade counter.

Have a look at http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/components/cmos.htm. You'll see there's not a lot you can't do from a 9V battery and some clever thinking.

Although if you really want to get serious, try PICs.

I was doing that sort of stuff at GCSE level 15 years ago. Kids nowadays are playing with PICs at primary school, I think
