I have currently got a baxi boiler which is about 15 years old, hot water tank in the loft which doesn't have a cylinder thermostat and with thermostatic valves on radiators. I wondered if I changed to a combi boiler what sort of savings could I expect. I realise it depends on usage but if anybody could give me some idea percentage wise I would be obliged.

Anything you fit will save you money
EXCEPT
1) when the combi goes belly up, you may or may not have heat or HW,
2) You may or may not get someone competent to be able to repair the combi,
3) Open vented to sealed system can mean leaks resulting in constant topping up
4) Many more parts to go wrong
5) HW flowrate is nothing to write home about.
6) plenty more probs I cannot be a***d putting here.

Advantages. I like combis because it means more work for me.

Do the sensible thing. Get your present boiler serviced (not swept), upgrade the controls with HW zone fitted with a motorised valve and thermsotat etc. You then have a bombproof old workhorse.

As a rule of thumb a combi (band a) will save you 35%. A good quality high output combi such as the Vaillant ecotecplus 837 or glow worm ultracom 38cxi will deliver good hw flow rates (cold mains permitting) and be very reliable. Also worth investing in topping up your loft/cavity wall insulation as this is a very cost effective way of reducing your bills.
