Over the last 6 weeks or so our Grant Combi boiler has broken down 10 or so times. The guy who has come out to look at it has fitted 4 new oil pumps, a new tiger loop and a (I think) a non return valve at the oil tank yet a day or two after he leaves the same thing happens. He is now talking about replacing the burner! In the mean time, we have no hot water yet again.

The symptoms seem to be that when you press the restart button, the tiger loop begins to fill with oil but the burner wont fire - the guy told me today that there are problems with the solenoid coil not opening (???)

Anyone here got any ideas about what the problem might be? He doesn't seem to think its the control box or photosensor.

Probably the solenoid valve not opening?

Thats assuming the spark generator and electrodes are OK>

Yup, I think thats the one. He suspected that the oil pumps were a faulty batch initially but this clearly isnt the case. It's a flippin nightmare!

4 pumps? sounds a lot...... wait.. is a a lot

he did put the little screw in, to convert the pump to two pipe operation?

I do find this a very unusual senario! Four pumps ???? Who is paying?

Is this a newly installed boiler under warranty? Has the service agent replaced them under the warranty?

If its the manufacturer then perhaps you should complain to them that their service agent is not doing the job properly. Its not Alan is it?

The boiler is about 5 or 6 years old. And the only thing I have paid for is the tiger loop and a single oil pump.

The whole things strikes me as bizarre. How bloody hard can it be to fix this thing. It isn't a nuclear reactor!

How hard it is to fix it depends NOT on the complexity of the fault but on the COMPETENCE of the person trying!

In my view anyone setting out to fix boilers should have the skills to do just that! To demonstrate their competence they should offer a fixed price diagnostic charge and offer a no-fix no-fee service.
