Whilst having some quotes for other roof work I mentioned to a roofer that we have what sounds like a gale blowing in our loft on windier days. There do not appear to be any missing tiles etc. The previous house owner replaced concrete gutters with plastic ones and this roofer suggested that due to the newer gutters fitting differently the wind was probably coming in through the eaves. He said it was nothing to worry about if we have no sign of water leaks.

We have no obvious leaks but intend to go and check this weekend. However the noise is so loud on very windy days and I am wondering if this is normal and if there is a solution?

Your roofer is correct, attics should have plenty of airflow to dissipate condensation rising from the rooms below.

Is it normal to sound like the roof is coming off though? The gusts are so bad they wake us up. We will be putting in a new loft hatch which should cut the sound down. We were also worried the wind would damage the loft contents as it sounds so bad.

Get the roofer to check the fascia board has no large spaces in it and your loft floor is well insulated approx 450mm.
