Converting coal fire to gas

I have a cast iron fireplace installed and wanted to put a gas fire insert (one of the coal ones) into the bottom where the real coal would have sat and had a couple of questions. An old 1950's fire was taken out, and I have cut away some of the brick and filler to allow this cast iron (coa burning) insert to fit. But I am unsure how you would connect the space at the back (behind the hood) to a flue of any sort and there fore if a flue would be appropriate in this situation. The existing baby brick has a slope and follows roughly the same contours as the back of the insert when sat in place. How much work would this be to make this suitable for a working fire. I would maybe have to make a hole to allow a gas pipe to be fed through the back to feed the insert which would hopefully be contained in the grate.

the chimney is swept and clear, it was an old 50s wall mounted gas bar fire which was removed.

I’m confused as to where the radiant gas fire comes into it? Also you’d have to follow manufacturers instructions for the fire you want to install.

I would leave it to your Gas Fitter to do the required preparation as part of the whole installation.

you do realise that it will only be about 20% efficient and is basically throwing money up the chimney
