Hello,

I currently have a double oven with a total draw of 6.8kw and a hob with a draw of 6kw connected to a single 40 amp cooker switch wired in to a 30 amp fuse.

I'm looking to update this and would like an induction hob with a draw of 7.2kw. I have been told this is possible by:

- Updating the Consumer Unit
- Change the 30amp to 40amp - with RCD protected switches
- Install another 40 amp oven switch in the kitchen (both switches would feed from the same 6mm wire against a single fuse

Although this would be 14,300 watts / 230volts = 62amps , I am told that diversity means the 40amp fuse would be sufficient.

1. Could someone please confirm this sounds fine and
2. What's the worst that could happen? trip the switch?

thank you.

If you have rewirable fuses you cannot fit a larger fuse with 6mm² cable.

Should you replace the consumer unit and have MCBs then you could fit a 40A.

Although -

Your 6000 + 7200 = 13200W/240V = 55A.
With diversity applied this is 23.5A (28.5A if you have a socket in the cooker switch)

You can connect both of these to the present supply - assuming it has been installed correctly.
