can anyone tell me if you can just fit a plug to a cooker hood or does it have to be wired into socket. thanks paul

Yes, normally a plug is fine. Usually you need a 3A fuse in it - depends on the fan.
You can use a plug & socket, or an FCU, or a flex outlet plate supplied by a remote FCU or grid switch - entirely down to what you'd prefer to do.
