i am putting a socket in a spare room i have found a cooker ring main nearby can i take a spur off it for my socket

probably not a cooker ring main, but a cooker radial circuit.

i take it you mean a dedicated cooker supply, wired in large cable like 6 or 10 mm.

is a cooker currently connected to it?

personally i don't like to add things to a cooker circuit that is actually supplying a cooker; tho others here will disagree.

any other wiring nearby eg kitchen worktop socket, extractor supply, wiring in cupboards etc?

or are you planning to break into the cable, ie somewhere not in the kitchen?
