I think it's fixed!
The brass item:

Actually fitted perfectly on to the thread. There was no swivel so I had to take the panel apart a bit to screw it on but then the barb was just right too.
Not sure why the swivel one from B&Q didn't work but this one is probably better if slightly harder to fit. There's no moving parts or gaps to leak now.
Thanks so much for your continued support on this. Helping me with the terminology really helped me find the thing and being able to check if I could get what I had working.
You have all been a great deal of help and saved me a few hundred quid.
