In the building trade there appeared to be a N-S divide in materials.
As far as I could tell, in days of old (etc....), grey cable was sold in the North and white in the South in wholesalers. If you got hold of white T&E in the North, it was from a shed.
And (again from my experience) plaster (be it undercoat or skim) in the North was pink and grey down South.
