hi, has anyone any experience of fitting an aftermarket cruise control kit ,
are they ok, can they be removed easily afterwards to fit on another car.
I intend to have a professional fit it but would like to be able to remove it myself if straight forward

many thanks

its a 12 plate vw passat 2.0 diesel s auto

you may find that the main wiring could be within the looms anyway.but adding all the other bits and perhaps having to recode the ecu may not be cost effective,
but hey everythings possible.

best bet would be to join a dedicated passat forum and ask the qs there and see if there tech guys have done anything similar.

It will connect to the CAN bus network, which as you probably know is a 2 wire data communication network that allow all the control systems in the car to have a chat. Probably will be connected to a box known as the Gateway, which is positioned under the dash on most VW cars. The box allows the 3 different CAN networks that are on the car, to communicate with each other. So this is an ideal place to go to get all three networks (6 wires) that the cruise control will need to interact with. If you have an interest in networks just tap it into Utube for loads of tutorials.

To answer your question, its best to get it factory fitted, especially if you are going for adaptive (or active) cruise control which will apply the brakes, as it will be an integral part of the vehicle. But if its fitted properly, which I'm sure it will be, you should be satisfied with the results. Removing will be straightforward, refitting to a second (especially different) car may take a bit of skill.

You make a good choice going for VW/VAG

Edit 1:
Just be careful that fitting will not affect your VW warranty

I've been involved with a couple of these, and basically you get a new column switch, and sometimes a lower steering column cover.
The mechanicals are simple enough, but its back to a VW specialist to have it coded to the CAN network.
I wouldn't go for any aftermarket kit for this vehicle, even if there is one.
John :)

your right on getting the switch and column cover

but anyone with VCDS diagnostic tool can code it you dont have to go to main dealer

I have VCDS and fitted and coded my cruise to my Audi A4

theres plenty of people about with VCDS get on a few VW and Audi forums and find someone local who will do it for you

ps im in yorkshire if it helps and i wouldnt touch after market for a VW

"ps im in yorkshire if it helps and i wouldnt touch after market for a VW"

why do you say that Sakm , are they no good ?

Its not that they arent any good

VW use complicated systems that talk to each other and are all on can bus and after market could easily mess things up

if everything is already there for the cruise except the stalk its just a case of buying a stalk and lower steering cowl and coding it in and it will work as intended

Yes I fitted one to our alhambra (also vw electrics) diesel engine. (01 plate so older)

Anyone with latest diagnostics can turn yours on for you, it might be all you need it the switch, the ecu etc will have the capability so use the cars existing (not turned on yet) capability not a separate aftermarket kit. I wouldn't trust it for cruise control.

However, I bought a genuine vw indicator & cruise switch and piece of loom that was needed to fit to mine as a kit cheaply (£40 rings a bell) from a german parts suppier on ebay but it was still genuine vw part. Fitted myself but mine did need wired directly in to the ecu multiplug which was a bit dodgy if u don't have experience (i do), hopefully ur newer car will be easier and have a connector already under steering column. Try vwaudiforum someone there will know for sure for your car.

I got a local vw guy to switch it on with diagnostics for £20 which is a heck of a lot cheaper than buying the connector to do from laptop myself.

Works great, no dealer needed. :)
