15 soccer teams enter for a knockout competition.
How many matches will have to be played?
Assume no draws or replays.

80,000 teams enter the next competition ... How many games now?

14 matches (one team gets a bye in first round)

79,999 matches (...how many would get a bye in first round?)

Correct, n-1 matches where n = number of teams.

17 total rounds including the final for the 80,000
No byes in first round ... 80,000/2 = 40000

6 byes in total.
1 each, rounds 8-11 inclusive and rounds 15-16 = 6

8)

Wouldnt the byes be given in the early rounds, it cant be fair having a bye after matches have been played (unless a team pulls out). Im only asking..Dont bite me

Edit as spelling error, hate them

Nah, ko competition, just divide teams in the mix by 2 for matches required, never be more than a remainder of 1 so that becomes a bye, when it occurrs.
At a remainder of one, draw straws for the bye .. but then, there is no match income from a bye.. swings and roundabouts .. The next round will be more profitable ..
:D :D

This has nothing to do with footie.....

My eye problem must be worse than I thought...

I read the post title as "Cue Tip........."

When I saw it was footie, I thought Pip had gone nuts, What's he writing about football for when the title's to do with snooker/pool??

Hm...

Blimey SS ! What did you make of 'no draws'? - {drawers (drôrz)} I bet ;) :D :D
