D link wireless router.

As you can see have edited my post as I was wrong about IP address

Virtual PC sounds interesting, question why are you using Me inside virtual windows?

Anyway back on OP original (before the MODS get me :) ) some quick thoughts and gotchas that caught me out in the past.

securespark - sorry for the digression

Are you using ADSL filters ?

If so is the filter connected to the telephone socket then router direct to computer?

Is the connection to the BT master socket or extension? If extension try main socket

Is it configured to obtain IP address automatically?
Check by
Find your Local Area Connection icon in Network Connections
Right click and select Properties
On the General tab under This connection uses the following items:
Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click on Properties
Select Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically

You do not need the installation CD to get a connection
Open a web browser and enter the address http://192.168.1.1
You should then get a connection screen of some sort
The default username is ‘admin’. The default password is also ‘admin’.
If you cannot get this far you may have to reset the router to factory settings - you never know someone may have changed it
Check the LED’s on the front of the router. The Power, WLAN, DSL and Internet LED should be on. One or more of the LAN LED should flash.
Check that all the cables are firmly connected at both ends with filters in correct place.
Power the router off for 20 seconds, and then power it back on.

If this fails contact your ISP to make sure the service has been enabled and your username and password are correct. This one caught me out with Orange as they assured me that service enabled and username correct. In the event they lied - was not enabled for nearly one month!!

Yes, I downloaded virtual PC from the microsoft website and installed windows me to it from a CD.
The network setup is a bit different in windows me, don't think the filters etc are an issue yet - need to get the PC to talk via the network to the router first.

My apologies I was refering to an old adsl modem router for the settings.

192.168.1.1 seems to be the norm for Dlink now.

JHC, what an unbelievable load of getting nowhere at warp speed.

securespark - do you, or do you not, have a working Ethernet adapter (aka NIC) in your computer?

If so, is an IP address being allocated to it?

If you don't how to check, then use ipconfig.

If you don't know how to do that, then type "ipconfig" in a DOS window.

If you don't know how to open a DOS window, then click on Start, then Run, then type "command" and click on "OK".

If the NIC isn't connecting, then see if setting the speed to 10Kbits/s makes it work - some NIC and router combinations don't auto-negotiate very successfully.

Have tried entering the IP address in browser - nothing.

Have tried pinging: Reply is-

Reply from 80.189.99.209 Destination host unreachable

Shall try what has been suggested about setting up without disk.

Thanks for all your help so far. I'll let you know what happens!

Edit One: Softus, the result of ipconfig:

0 Ethernet Adaptor

IP Address 192.168.0.11
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1

1 Ethernet Adaptor

IP Address 91.125.140.132
Subnet Mask 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway 91.125.140.132

Edit Two: Tony:

Yes, I have filters. Connected to secondary BT outlet then router then PC.

Cannot find LAC icon...! Have not got "INTERNET" LED on router illuminated. Methinks I have found the problem...

Just call me PC Numpty.

Edit: Softus, the result of ipconfig:

IP Address 192.168.0.11
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1
OK. This is promising.

When it's in this state, what happens when you 'ping' the router?

The command (in the DOS window) is "ping 192.168.0.1".

If you get replies, then there should be no reason why you can't log in to the router and configure it. So if you get ping replies, what happens if you put "192.168.0.1" in a browser address field?

Hmm. Now pinging 192.168.0.1 get nothing but request timed out x 4.

Pinging 192.168.0.11 gets a response.

Have you manually configured your NIC to use "192.168.0.11"?

You can double check this with "ipconfig /all".

Do you have a firewall that might be blocking ICMP? Like Norton or McAfee?

Could you try putting "192.168.0.1" in the browser address bar anyway?

Eh? Why is your PC connected to the microfilter? Or do you mean that the PC is connected to the router?

Cannot find LAC icon...!
What is the "LAC icon"?

I'd be very surprised if there was an Internet LED on, because you haven't yet configured the router. Tony's advice is bizarre on that point.

Is that "DHCP enabled" ??

If so, the 0 Ethernet Adaptor isn't (ie the D link) and the 1 Ethernet Adaptor is (guess this is my current ADSL modem?)

Yes.

Oh dear. If you did that then you'll know how to undo it, otherwise I can tell you.

...and the 1 Ethernet Adaptor is (guess this is my current ADSL modem?)
I presume that you're relying on that connection to post here. If not, then please unplug that ADSL modem - you won't be able to share the ADSL signal onto two routers anyway.

One problem is your network card is on the address ending 0.*, the address of the router is on an address ending 1.*
The first 3 sets of numbers both need to be the same (subnet?) i.e. your network card can be 192.168.1.2 and the router can be 192.168.1.1
Now to figure out how to get your network card to change IP addresses!

If you open your system properties in control panel can you see your network adaptor in there?

Have you manually configured your NIC to use "192.168.0.11"?

Cannot find the device to alter the settings!

Yes, I have. But I'm not getting anything, ie page not found...

The ADSL filter is plugged into a secondary telephone outlet. Into that is plugged the cord connected to my existing ADSL modem and will be the connection to the router when it's set up.

Just working on all the advice kindly given:

The Power, WLAN, DSL and Internet LED should be on.

Without a connection to the BT socket, I get the Power, WLAN & LAN port No. 1 LED's showing (the ethernet cable is attached to the No.1 port).

When connection is made to the BT network, the DSL LED illuminates too.

I take it my problem is that I cannot find the device to alter settings or configure it. I thought I wasn't a technophobe, but I'm a bit lost now! ;)

Spark123: Here is screen print...but I can't see how to configure anything..

OK. I understand everything in your post, but focussing on the IP address...

You'll find the NIC device in the Device Manager (Control Panel->System->Hardware), but in Windows 98/Me you need to run the Network Control Panel applet to configure TCP/IP.

I've stolen an image from the Interwebby to illustrate what you need to do, as follows:

View media item 1027

Clicking on your image tells me I don't have permission to view your file!

Mine eyes art not what they used to be...

EDIT: Think I've done as you suggest:

Changed setting to automatic IP address option.

BTW, the addresses in there already were:

192.168.0.11

255.255.255.0

Weren't they the right addresses anyway?

Yours confusedly,
