I rang esure the other day about the household insurance. Mrs Secure arranged it originally. I needed to contact a whole bunch of companies to change DD dates.

esure: Can I confirm your D.O.B?

me: You don't have a record of my D.O.B.

esure: Can I confirm it anyway?

me: Can I have your name?

esure: Why?

me: I want to report you to the F.S.A.*

And so it went on with all the companies I contacted. They nearly all wanted my D.O.B and none of them got it.

I don't know what it is, but these days organisations think they have a God-given right to ask for whatever information they want and get it.

It's time to fight back people!!!!

* I could only use this line with insurance-based products.

Yeah. All apart from PlusNet, who can't move it, but can give us 2 weeks grace and we can pay by debit card instead and Scottish Widows Pension who just can't. Don't know why.

You'll have a job reporting them to the FSA - it ceased to exist on 1st April 2013. But we know what you mean.

Capital one credit card were always ringing me but wouldn't speak to me because the D.O.B I gave them over the phone was incorrect?

I willingly answer security questions which I have agreed with the company beforehand, but will not supply such information to just anybody.

I will NEVER EVER give out sensitive information when they ring me.

Could be any old scammer

They may not have a record that YOU provided, but they have access to the electoral roll and your credit files, so maybe they Do know your DOB, but needed you to prove you were who you claimed.

Mu beef is the regularity with which CC co's phone to confirm a card transaction, and expect you to provide security details. Admittedly, they only ask for part of them, but a few calls, and a scammer has the set  It annoys me anyway that they feel they have to phone so often in the first place

Fair enough.

In which case they can ID me by the details I did provide them with.

I object to organisations ringing up and trying to glean information they have no right to, while pretending they do.

I had a cold caller - on my land line - recently who asked ME if I would confirm my post code 'for security reasons' ( don't know how many more questions they would have asked had I done so).

I said "You called me. I should ask YOU for security details".

She said "I'll give you the first half and you tell me the rest".

'cough.

It never went any further than that question to be honest but I did have other banks ringing me constantly to tell me that I was behind with my payments but I would just tell them that I couldn't give out my details over the phone - they couldn't argue with that because that's what they preach.
