Dangerous electrical installation

Meerkat,

A quick search leads me to believe you have employed Handykat for your building work. Surely you should know he specialises in sheds, decking and scale replicas of the Statue Of Liberty.

Send him back to Meerkovo and employ a proper builder.

Simples.

 I hear you Robger. Problem is Handykat's not from Meerkovo, or anywhere remotely near. He's local.

Meerkat,

Don't give up yet on getting some good reliable advice on this post. I'm sure a certain Mr. Sheds will reappear at some point with a couple of hundred thousand words on the subject.

So Ban-all-Sheds has thanks in the 100's?

It's actually around 660 ish thanks, out of some thirty thousand odd posts - I'm not that good at percentages and stuff........., but no wonder you thanked him on this post as he seemed to agree with you that your builder had 'broken the law' with no other evidence than your say so......

P of d, this is obviously too much for you to handle so just leave it to the big boys. Do you belong to any associations? Just curious. With a name like that I hope you're not a sparky. Again, only a complete tw*t would run to the defence of someone that leaves live cables in a house where people live, including children.

Playing devil's advocate is one thing. Defending negligence is another. This is a forum, not a court of law and I would never post more evidence than I need to.

NO real tradesman, wouldn't defend the work of a cowboy.

PS - I suspect you've been posting up your own thanks.

The way I read this thread is that PofD is not siding with the cowboys but is warning you that your case is not as cast-iron as you think it is.

However strong you think your case is, until you've seen your opponent's response, you don't have a measure of your real strength. The cost of going to court in terms of money and aggro lead anyone with any sense to regard it as the very last thing to do. All avenues of resolution should be explored first, even those costing you money. They will almost certainly cost you less than if you let m'learned friends get their sticky mitts on your affairs.

If you're so sure you want to take the risk, do go ahead. I sincerely hope you get the outcome you want. I'd love to hear in due course that you've been successful.

Yes indeed, Stods. I'm not siding with these alleged 'cowboys'. But the thing is, that the O/P has already shown himself to be persistently argumentative and abusive to a few posters here, just because they've doubted his word.

There's always two sides to every story. Wherever there's a builder there's quite often a disgruntled customer.

I don't believe, for a start, that the electrician left live wires hanging out of walls.......

There's a great deal less to this O/P than meets the eye.

The amount of times I used to hear '...there were live cables left out the wall' when all it was were the first fix cables'.
It was usually down to awkward customers trying everything to get some money off the bill....

I had a situation very similar to yours, dodgy builder using dodgy electrician (and non corgi approved plumbers installing gas boiler).

We fell out with our builder, as you have and we too had one of those off the shelf court letters. I replied, in writing, with a very official letter explaining our grievances and the fact that we may take the situation with the gas and electrics further. The originators of the court letter promptly told us they would not pursue it and we never heard from the builder again.

As regards to electrics, this was more or less finished, but was of course uncertified. Had lots of trouble getting a proper respected guy round to help with this, understandably, but we got one good enough to help us out, checked everything he could, took every socket and fitting off to check, and ran every test he could. Checked the cable runs as best he could with photo's I'd taken during the build.

So we were ok in the end. Your builder hasn't got a leg to stand on, he'll get nowhere, no matter what he threatens you with, and he'll know it.

By the way, one thing our 'electrician' did was cut a cable to a socket too short, so joined it to another in a ball or tape and pushed it out of sight under the plasterboard. Nightmare!
