Im having some Evolution windows fitted and they offer chrome, white, or black handles in a period style. My house is 1920-30's. Im wondering if the chrome woul dlook too new. Is there any possibility of having the black handles resprayed white by a local bodyshop? The black handles do not have locks due to their design but an allen key type.

Why don't you just have the white ones fitted in the first place, or don't they have the same allen key locking as the black ones?

They unfortunately only do the black ones in the period style, the white ones are your average modern type with key locks.

Well reading your posts for the last few weeks it seems you want your new windows to be in keeping with the the period so i'd have the black, infact if you wanted to look im sure theres plenty of ironmongers out there that have more of a choice than your local DG company

Yes I see your point, the original wooden windows in the other houses have the old style handles in white.

Also the glazing guy suggested black sills, however theres only one house out of approx 200 that has this as he has the original wooden windows. Would black sills be a feature or a bit out of place?

I've never seen a black cill, did they mean it would be sprayed black or have they got black profile?

Personally and this is just me, i would steer clear of mixing white and black, one will absorb more heat than the other and then you'll allsorts of funny rates of expansion going on, could cause problems.

Years ago you'd see white upvc windows with woodgrain beads yet you don't see it now..........i wonder why?

Basically its like a foil, its a company called Evolution. Not sure what you mean by woodgrain beads though. They do use a woodgrain foil which I've seen in the flesh in a Georgian property and does look very nice, takes off the shine that you usually get with standard UPVC.

I get you, its a black foil, same as woodgrain mahogany or rosewood is a foil. What i meant with the beads is some people asked for woodgrain (foiled) beads fitted to their white windows.

But like i said, i would be very wary of dark pvc, i see a lot of bowed and warped pvc doors, windows and cills caused by what little heat we get in the summer

Oh right I see what yr sayin now. Yes I guess white repels the heat and black attracts it.

Correct, woodgrain and black will suck up all that heat, mix that with something white (screwed together) and you'll get a whole heap of trouble, just from what i observe as a service engineer

Im going to ask the guy for a sample of each, basically the chrome is the same design as the black period, but this one is rough as opposed to the smooth chrome finish. Checked the ironmongers but decided to stick with the glazing comapny. Its the Storm Evolution range, take a look at their catalogue and see what u guys think!

Indeed I thought they looked good too. Howver I went to view a customer who had georgian windows fitted to a georgian period property, but didnt opt for the stays though, apparently he felt that they would look a bit wrong when the window was open as they stay fixed to the window I believe. Nice looking when closed though. If that all makes sense!
