I have been laying scaffold board decking but as much as I clean the boards to almost white as soon as I apply wood preserve the wood darkens considerably.

If I apply clear decking oil only it preserves the orginal colour and patina of the wood far better.

As decking oil is waterproof would it be a problem if I simply applied decking oil without the wood preserve and simply re-apply a coat of oil every spring and autumn ?

I can also apply wood preserve to the underside of the wood so it is protected where it touches the support beams .

its the light refractive index
any coating will effect the colour
if the boards are white pine now within two years will be quite dark antique pine without any coating or protection and probably darker with
