Deodorizing a picnic rug

Does anyone know how to do this? The rug has a plastic backing so can't be machine washed. A dog decided to make itself comfortable on it and now it smells strongly of dog.

I'd give it a Delicate machine wash anyway. If it spoils the rug, it's already spoiled, so who cares?
