I read an article yesterday that said Churchill was strongly opposed to the D Day landings preferring to invade via Southern Europe, Italy. He was overruled and D Day went ahead, but experts who have since analysed Churchills alternative plan have come to the conclusion the war may have ended 6 months earlier had the alternative plan been adopted.
The usual moron Gassy started the thread in the first place, just to start point-scoring.

Not sure it's a fact exactly, he was strongly opposed to D Day but came around to it nearer to the time, seems there's quite a bit of debate around the issue.

Churchill had tried unsuccessfully to gain Cabinet approval for “Project Catherine”: a plan to send a British task force into the Baltic Sea to sever the German supply line to Sweden, but there's credible evidence the aircraft carrier may have been part of a plan to prevent the vital ore falling into Nazi hands on a later expedition that was ultimately thwarted by the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau.
