Does new chamber insulation go black and smoke

When relighting my pilot light the other day I noticed the chamber insulation had seen better days, I ordered up a new kit but after changing it I noticed the smell of smoke and when I took the cover off the new insulation was charred and smoking a bit. I put the old stuff back in for now just in case but was wondering is that normal? it is a genuine replacement part, has te company logo on the box.

If you are not RGI (I suspect not) then you should leave it to someone who knows what they are doing as you obviously do not.No further advice should be given.

You have clearly done something wrong; don't use the boiler and get a RGI out to make it safe.
