So following suggestions on this site i went for a larger 7.2 battery for my Texecom Excel system.

Now when fitting, its quite a tight squeeze and had to push some cables out the way.

A friend said that the panels can get quite hot and i should get a smaller one to make more room.

Thoughts? I have a 3.4 bettery, shall i swap it over?

Also how long do batteries last if unused? Shall i just keep the 3.4 as a spare?

Cheers!

The 7.2Ah will be fine, and the excel is designed to take one.

It is a little overkill, but it will do no harm.

The only time it could overheat is if it went faulty, but that is no different whatever size you fit.

Not sure about the shelf life of a battery.

Unused batteries slowly discharge in storage, and need occasional charging to maintain them.

They usually have very specific charging requirements to prevent damage to the battery, requiring an 'intelligent' charger matched to the size and type of battery to keep them in a usable state.

'Intelligent' chargers monitor the battery voltage and charging current quite closely, but they often fail to recognise and start charging a fully discharged battery when they are connected to it.

When you've finished messing about with a charger, then forget to charge it in a couple of years time and leave it in the back of the shed, by the time you need it, it will probably be in no better state than the battery you want to replace.
