Oo-err.

I replaced a CU that way once - not big and not clever, and you need VDE screwdrivers with absorbent handles for the sweaty palms...

Dead conductors into live terminals don't make you sweat as much as live conductors into dead terminals

(...Yes I have  )

I'd do an IR test to try and get a little piece of mind.

I did consider doing an IR test, but I took the view that it may cause failure, at least at 500V.

I have also been thinking that I will have to isolate via the henley blocks - if I try and call EDF out to isolate for the work to be done they may turn it all off there and then!

I have a steady hand, and know the risks - plus I played 'operation' a lot as a kid

If you do work live, which we all know you mustn't then make sure the isolator is switched off (on the DB to be disconnected), and also remove the live from the henly block before the neutral. This will avoid and 'sparks' which may make you jump an slip onto something nasty (caused by a loaded cable being disconnected), and also it will prevent the neutral cable from becoming 'live' due to 'neutral feedback'

Of course you really must not work live. (but if you do be very careful)

"neutral feedback" (the neutral floating up to live which its connected to via the loads) shouldn't happen if the isolator in the CU is off, probablly still not a bad idea in case there is something wrong with the isolator.

it was some really bad (downright dangerous if followed though written in a fairly sarcastic tone) advice from that new troll.

hi a quick note, all electricians should not work live at all times, but however what should we do when we have to test an installation after we have done the sequence of tests on the shop R1+R2 etc how do we test the earth loop resestance?
Answer by method statements by live working and qualified personel, and getting a competent person to carry out the works.
hope this helps

I've clearly not been paying attention - who's the new troll?

the poster above your most recent one, his advice seems to vary from dubious to downright wrong (though in his defense he may have intended it as sarcasm) and dispite his claims to be in the industry he is making mistakes which make it very doubtfull he is a properly qualified sparky (like assuming PIR=passive infa red when the context made it very clear it was periodic inspection report, asking very basic questoins, asking a very basic question about wiring an "electric bath" etc)

Thats the worst grammer I've seen for quite some time, but from you, I suppose its not too unexpected...

@Ban, yeah he trolled in here saying about fitting larger fusewire, and jamming breaker levers (all in caps I might add)

Also see: http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=55276&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 , not really trolling there, but a touch of the 'seahawk2nigel' mentallity, if you remember him?

This guy sounds like one of the numptys from Screwfix. There are a few who just spout nonsense (in caps). Hope it's a one-off. The good thing about this site is the free exchange of info/opinions between sparks and diyers. That used to be the case on Screwfix but it's gone downhill lately.

yes because all the people who actually knew what they were talking about left screwfix to found ask the trades (links to there from here are blocked due to overzealous promotional attemts in ATTs very early days) after getting ****ed off at the constant influx of newbies and trolls, the cr*ppy forum software and the lack of moderators who cared about anything other than occasionally removing promotion of other suppliers.

decent moderators (the ones here are pretty good at the job of keeping the forum clean even though they have some policies i can't say i aprove of) are essential to the good running of a forum. It is vital to clamp down on a**holes quickly and efficiantly before they do significant damage (of course you get some who just keep coming back whatever you do. (remember millenium boy?) but most will give up quite quickly once they know thier antics won't be tollerated.
