Hi

Just fitted 16 downlighters - LV 50W. All are controlled via a 2 gang 400w dimmer - 8 on each gang.

Dimmer gets warm and buzzes after prolonged use and does not control the dimming properly. One of the downlighters switches off for a while, again after prolonged use, them comes back on after about 20 mins.

Any ideas?

Did you read the bit in the instruction manual supplied with the dimmer switch which states that it needs to be derated when used with halogen loads?

The D/L which switches its self on and off is an unrelated problem.

If you still wish to dim the lights you will either have to reduce the wattage of all the lamps, or install a 1000W dimmer for each set of 8 D/Ls

You may be lucky & find one that does not need derating, then you will avoid the need to butcher the wall further.

Has the downlight fad not died yet?

When will people learn its not cool to butcher their ceilings, and fit really bright lights, then DIM THEM!!!! :?

And as for the energy these things consume - in an age when we're trying to reduce our carbon footprints, people ought to be ashamed.
